Early life
Shroff was born Jai Krishan Kakubhai Shroff in Mumbai. His father, Kakulal Harilal Shroff, was a Gujarati Hindu and his mother, Amrita Kakulal ("Rita") Shroff (née Hurunnisa Muratovna Mashurova), was a Uyghur from Kazakhstan. In an interview in 2017 with Rajya Sabha TV, Shroff described the circumstances in which his parents came to Mumbai. In the early 1900s, his grandmother, an Uyghur escaped to Ladakh as a refugee along with her seven daughters when there was a coup in Chinese occupied East Turkistan. They earned a subsistence by selling rice pearls (Yaarkandi) an Uyghur meal that originates from Yarkand, always travelling. They thus migrated to Lahore, thence to Delhi and finally, to Bombay where his mother met his father who was an astrologer for Kokila Ben and Nattulal Ambani. His father came from a Gujarati family of merchants and traders, however they lost their money in the stock market and his father had to leave home at the age of 17. His father met his mother when both were teenagers, they fell in love and got married. Together the extended family lived in a 30 ft by 30 ft room in a chawl in the Teen Batti area of Malabar Hill, Mumbai, where 30 people shared 3 bathrooms
Before entering the film industry, Shroff was a local toughie. However, as a toddler, Shroff relates that he was rather scared, especially when he saw his elder brother drown and die when he himself was just ten. This incident had a lasting impact on Shroff and it was his mother who protected him all this while. Shroff has no siblings. As a youngster, he modelled in a few advertisements including Savage perfumes. It was one of his classmates in school who gave Shroff his name "Jackie" and then film maker Subhash Ghai stuck to this name when he launched him in the film Hero. Shroff revisits his childhood home in Teen Batti every week.
